Riots Break Out at Junos

Reporter: Tamara Harpster

BRICKSVILLE, CA July 17 2002 – Juno’s restaurant was surrounded by rioters today as panic broke out when they ran out of food. They had advertised an all you can eat special for $1.99, which brought in many people from surrounding towns, such as Vaca, Mexitaly, Bosso and Melands. At approximately 4:00 p.m., supplies ran out and the owners were forced to close the restaurant to any new customers.

When word of this spread thru the crowd waiting outside, fights began to break out. Before police could arrive, a mob had grown and riots had broken out all around Juno’s restaurant on Wax Street.

Police used tear gas to stop the angry mobs and in the ensuing panic, seven people were killed from being trampled as people ran from the area. When this reporter interviewed one of the people left afterwards, they said, “I rioted because there wasn’t any food and I was really mad.”

He was supposedly seen driving a yellow car away from the scene shortly before police arrived. It is unknown why he was at Juno’s restaurant although there is speculation that he may have had a hand in starting the riots today.

Reports were that he was driving a 1998 Volkster, yellow in color as shown in the bottom picture. This picture happened to be captured by a news camera that was filming the riots at Juno’s restaurant at the time.
